Σύμφωνα με τους ιστορικούς της τέχνης, είναι αυτός που άλλαξε την τέχνη της ζωγραφικής από ελληνική (δηλαδή βυζαντινή) σε λατινική και της έδωσε μοντέρνα μορφή. Mε άλλα λόγια, εισάγει με το έργο του το μοντέρνο στοιχείο, το οποίο θα σημαδέψει, όχι μόνο την ίδια την τέχνη, αλλά και την καλλιτεχνική συνείδηση των νεότερων χρόνων. |
